Our History

Driving Engineering Excellence
Since 1955

Nurturing innovation and excellence in engineering practices, our branch focuses on optimizing processes and delivering sustainable solutions for the advancement of the engineering profession.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) was established in London, England, on the 6th of February, 1958, with Engr. Chief G.O. Aiwerioba as President and Engr. Chief T. Teju Oyeleye as Secretary.

Approximately a year later, on the 18th of January, 1959, the first branch of the Society was established in Abeokuta. Shortly after, the National Secretariat was established in Lagos with Engr. Chief Adeniyi Williams as President and Engr. Chief G.O. Aiwerioba as Secretary.

The NSE was formally inaugurated in Lagos on the 20th of August, 1960, by the Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. In addition to the National Secretariat at the National Engineering Close, Victoria Island, Lagos, the Society is presently developing a Federal Capital Secretariat in Abuja, with over 36 branches nationwide.

PORT HARCOURT BRANCH

The Port Harcourt branch of the NSE was established on the 1st of December, 1972, with Engr. Eugene J. Wakama as Protem Chairman and Late Mr. B.K. Ikiriko as Protem Secretary, following the initiative of the then National President, Engr. Dr. S.O. Meshida.

In 1973, a formal general meeting was held where Late Engr. D.H.S. Souza-Okpofabiri was elected as Chairman and Late Mr. B.K. Ikiriko retained his position as Secretary. Notably, at the time, there were only five NSE members in Port Harcourt, which included Engr. Chief D.H.S. Souza-Okpofabiri, Engr. Dr. Sir Youpele O. Beredugo, Engr. Eugene J. Wakama, Engr. Chief Sir I.T.J. Ordor, and Engr. Sir Ishmael A. Banigo.

Despite this small number, due to Port Harcourt's strategic importance as the center of Nigeria's oil industry, the NSE National Headquarters approved the establishment of the branch. A local membership category was created to accommodate more members, and later, most of the eligible local members became full members of the Society.

Over the years, the Port Harcourt Branch has grown significantly, becoming one of the largest branches of the NSE. The branch has played an essential role in the development of engineering and engineering education in Nigeria, successfully hosting the National Engineering Conference and Annual General Meeting in 1976, 1987, and 2001.

Like other NSE branches, the Port Harcourt Branch organizes Technical Evenings where papers are presented and discussed. These events provide a platform to examine the challenges and opportunities within Nigeria's engineering profession.
